This is one of the most common myths associated with chiropractic care. The answer is a simple, "No." Your doctor of chiropractic is there to help you reach your health care goals. If those goals include simple pain relief, he or she will likely recommend a course of care that will do just that....help you get out of pain. Once you are satisfied with how you feel, you can discuss discharge with your doctor. While it is likely that he or she may also recommend preventative strategies that include regular spinal check-ups, continuing with this type of care is completely up to you. For those patients that are interested in preventing future problems, maintenance care is available. This usually includes exercise recommedations, postural advice and regular visits at a much lower frequency. Research has shown that people who attend chiropractic regularly are less likely to have severe episodes of pain. In addition, studies are suggesting that maintaining good movement in your spinal joints can help reduce the risk of developing osteoarthritis in the spine. Chiropractic maintenance care is, in many respects, similar to regular dental check-ups. Nobody wants to wait for the pain of a toothache to see a dentist. Why wait for back pain? In the end however, the choice is always yours. And a good chiropractor will make sure you know that.
